Hussein Lesio Kidanto, PhD

Hussein Lesio Kidanto is an Associate professor, Agakhan University Medical College, He is currently the associate dean at the medical college Dar es Salaam Campus. A Tanzanian medical doctor specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He graduated from School of Medicine, University of Marmara, Turkey (1992), and holds a PhD in Public Health from Umea University, Sweden, He has Masters of medicine in obstetrics and Gynecology from University of Dar es Salaam He has more than 25 years of clinical experience in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology . Until recently, he was the Director of Maternal, Reproductive New born and Adolescent health at the Tanzania Ministry of Health (2016-2018). Previously, he was the Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital (2014-2015). Before that, he was head of the hospital’s teaching, research and consultancy unit (2013-2015), and consultant in-charge at the eclampsia ward (2007-2013) He has in-depth experience with development of multiple clinical guidelines for Tanzania Ministry of Health and has Published extensively on Maternal and new born health. Professor Kidanto has been researching on transition from intrauterine to extra uterine life of the newborn and their association to stillbirth and neonatal mortality. He has vast experience leading and participating in multi-centre research projects. He was the internal principal investigator of just ended ‘Safer Birth Project’, and principal investigator on the ‘Born Too Soon’ project. He was the national coordinator and principal Investigator on ‘The Woman Trial’ (2010-2015) and principal investigator of a study on intimate partner violence in pregnancy. He is associate editor for BMC pregnancy and childbirth, and member of Institutional Review Boards at AMREF, Tanzania office, and Ifakara medical research institute.
