Benin

Benin is a country in West Africa. In 2017-2018 the total fertility rate for Benin was 5.7 children per woman. (1) Benin has seen an increase in the percentage of institutional births from 76% in 2001 to 84% in 2017-2018, (1) with 78% of births in 2017-2018 being attended by a skilled birth attendant. (1). The maternal mortality rate (MMR) decreased by 24% between 2000 and 2017 from 520 per 100,000 livebirths to 397 per 100,000 respectively. (2) Women in Benin continue to face a 1 in 49 lifetime risk of maternal death, (2) whilst the neonatal mortality rate (NMR) was estimated to be 31 per 1,000 livebirths in 2019. (3)
