Makerere University (MAK)

Makerere University is Uganda’s premier institution of higher learning established in 1922. Makerere University has nine Colleges and one School, and a student body of about 30,000 undergraduates and 3,000 postgraduates (both Ugandan and foreign). The School of Public Health has led in research and innovations in Uganda and the region. The School is currently managing 12 projects and 5 programs funded by CDC, European commission, partner Universities and other development partners. The School of Public Health works closely with government, industry, business, and the community to drive public health, scientific and technological progress across East Africa, and the world at large. There exists strong partnership and collaboration with the Ministry of Health regarding guidance and support with evidence for policy and implementation strategies.

Over the years, MakSPH has successfully built a large network of reliable partners with Universities in the North and South. Some of MakSPH’s North to South collaborations are with: Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Harvard School of Public Health, University of Bergen, among many others. The South to South collaborations are with Stellenbosch University, South Africa, Wits University South Africa, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, and many others.

The Department of Nursing is the leader in nurse/midwifery training and research in Uganda since 1993. Currently, the department has trained and mentored nurse and midwifery leaders, researchers and teachers nationally and within the region. Partners include Universities in America, Europe, Australia and other African countries. The department is involved in Nursing and Midwifery policy formulation and guidance working with the Council, Unions and Ministry of Health.
